Salut à tous ! J'ai récemment téléchargé une petite pépite trouvée sur Miniature Mentor : le Staline S-65 Heavy Tractor monté, peint et vieilli par Rick Lawler. Je vous le recommande vivement et pour cela je vais essayer de vous convaincre.
Hi everyone! I've recently downloaded a gold chunk found on Miniature Mentor: the Staline S-65 Heavy Tractor built, painted and weathered by Rick Lawler. I strongly recommand this to you and I'll try to convince you.
La réputation de Rick Lawler n'est plus à faire ! C'est un grand modéliste dont le travail est soigné. Il a travaillé dans de nombreuses compagnies de modélistes et c'est un fidèle ami de Mig Jiménez. Ses travaux sont d'une grande qualité et c'est aussi un artiste qui n'hésite pas à fournir de précieux conseils. Il a un merveilleux site internet dans lequel il référence bon nombre de ses travaux et j'apprécie ses connaissances historiques et sa plume (Propaganda). C'est une des raisons pour lesquelles j'ai voulu télécharger son tutoriel de montage, peinture et vieillissement du Staline S-65 (L'article se trouve ici). En tant qu'admirateur de son travail, je voulais connaître sa manière de travailler et voir l'artiste au travail. Pour moi, cela aide beaucoup plus que des livres !
Rick Lawler's reputation is not to be made anymore! He is a great modeler whose work is careful. He's worked in many modeling companies and he is Mig Jimenez's faithful friend. His works are of great quality and he's of these artists who always give away precious advice. He has a very nice website on which you can see his works and I really enjoy his historical knowledge and the way he writes (Propaganda). This is one of the reasons why I wanted to download his tutorial on building, painting and weathering the Staline S-65 (his article is here). As I admire his work a lot, I really wanted to see how he works. To me, this helps a lot more than just books!
Préparez-vous pour 4 à 5 heurs de films en haute définition dans lequel vous trouverez tout de A à Z ! C'est exactement ce dont j'avais besoin, car même si je n'en suis pas à ma première maquette, j'éprouve le besoin de me sentir connecté aux bases même du modélisme. D'ailleurs, ce DVD est fait pour coller aux besoins de chacun néophytes comme avertis. Rappelons que Miniature Mentor est essentiellement basé sur des tutoriels de peinture de figurines, donc Rick avait tout intérêt à expliciter chaque étape pour dévoiler les bases, mais aussi pour inciter les figurinistes à se lancer dans le modélisme militaire ! Et c'est très convaincant !

It's exactly what I was expecting and needed, for even if I'm not building my very first model, I still feel the need to be connected to the bases of modeling. By the way, this DVD is made to stick to the needs of everyone, novices and skilled modelers. Note that Miniature Mentor is essentially based on tutorials for figure paintings, so Rick was to explain in details each step to reveal the bases of modeling, but also to convince figure painters to start military modeling! And convincing it is!
Le DVD commence avec l'ouverture de la boîte et l'idée originale de Rick Lawler. Le Staline S-65 auquel s'ajoute une sorte de dispositif anti-mine totalement improvisé basé sur une photo d'époque. Donc, c'est parti ! Découpage des pièces, collage, scratch, améliorations. Tout y passe. J'ai particulièrement apprécié le travail d'explicitation donné par Rick et ces petites astuces qui permettent de ne pas commettre des erreurs bêtes ou qui facilitent la mise en peinture future. Cela n'a pas été simple, j'en conviens, pour Rick, car il est souvent plus difficile d'expliquer ce que l'on fait pendant qu'on le fait, mais c'est bon de ressentir la concentration, les hésitations... Tout semble fait sur le vif, sans "préparation", sans scripte préalable. On ne s'ennuie pas un instant, car nous sommes près de Rick Lawler dans une atmosphère détendue et totalement naturelle.
The DVD starts with opening the box and Rick Lawler's original idea. The Staline S-65 to which he will add a totally improvised anti-mine system based on a historical photo. So, let's go! Cutting parts, glueing them, scratch building and adding resin parts. Everything's there. I particularly liked the way Rick tells things and the little tricks he gives to have a safe build and avoid silly moves. That wasn't easy, I must say, for Rick, for it's always harder to tell what you're doing when you're doing it, but it's good to feel his concentration and hesitations... It all seems "on live", without any preparation or script. You don't get bored any minute, for you're close to Rick Lawler in a relaxed atmosphere, completely natural.
La phase de peinture commence alors. Pour moi, c'est à partir de là que les choses deviennent vraiment prenantes, car nous entrons dans le sujet qui nous préoccupe le plus. Comment mettre en peinture, comment anticiper les prochaines étapes, comment faire si on se rate un peu ? Autant de questions qui trouvent naturellement réponse ici. Rick Lawler propose l'utilisation d'un fluide d'éraillure (AK-Interactive) après avoir apprêté le modèle et ajouté des teintes de rouille. Notez que chacune de ces étapes se fait devant la caméra. Rien n'est omis, soyons clairs ! Certains passages sont coupés, mais en aucun cas une étape n'a été oubliée. Si coupure il doit y avoir, la caméra montre très clairement l'étape dans son intégralité sur une partie du modèle, avant de couper. C'est un véritable plaisir. J'aime beaucoup la dualité dont fait preuve Rick. Il fait référence à ceux qui esquissent et ceux qui dessinent et il n'hésite pas à faire les deux. Esquisser en passant des couches de peintures rapides mais néanmoins habiles, dessiner en appliquant beaucoup de soin aux éraillures. Et cela se répète au fur et à mesure que l'on avance dans la lecture des vidéos.
Then starts the paint. To me, really interesting things are starting, for we are getting in the heart of the process of modeling. How to paint, how to anticipate further steps, how to do when you miss something? So many questions that find an answer here. Rick Lawler uses a chipping fluid (AK-Interactive) after having applied a primer and added some rust tones. Note that each of these steps is made on camera. Nothing is missing, let us be clear! Some parts are off camera, but there willl never be a missing step. If something is off camera, then it would have been explained entirely on a part of the model from A to Z, before cutting. Chipping for example, or pinwashing would be first told and shown on a part, then finished off camera. It's real pleasure. I really enjoyed Rick's duality. He refers to sketchers and drawers more than once and he does not hesitate playing playing both parts. A sketcher with fast and accurate paint strokes, and a drawer when it comes to very tiny scratches. And this is shown repeatedly as we watch the videos.
Puis vient le vieillissement. Et c'est l'apothéose ! Rien ne manque et c'est pour moi une source de connaissances. Rick fait un tour d'horizon des différentes techniques, méthodes d'application, des huiles, des énamels, des filtres, des pigments et le rendu final est excellent ! Mais surtout, c'est le fait de voir la main de Rick et d'entendre ses commentaires qui forment la richesse de cette vidéo.
Then comes the weathering. And it's the apotheosis! Nothing's missing and to me this is a source of knowledge. Rick shows many different techniques, methods using oils, enamels, filters, pigments and the final result is stunning! But most of all, the fact of seeing Rick's hands and listening to his comments that make the magic of this video.
Pour conclure, ce tutoriel de Rick Lawler par Miniature Mentor offre une véritable opportunité de progresser tout en consolidant les acquis. Ouvert à un large public, il permet de se familiariser avec les différents média pour construire, peindre et patiner un véhicule. Ce n'est en aucun cas un "livre" de recettes bête et méchant, car Rick explique les raisons de chaque geste. En cela cette vidéo permet d'appliquer les connaissances sur nos propres modèles. Le fait de voir et d'écouter Rick offre une plu-valu non négligeable à l'ensemble. J'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à voir cette vidéo. Je dirai même que j'ai eu l'impression de faire du modélisme en la regardant, tant la proximité est palpable. Rick ne se vante pas et n'est pas là pour nous donner une leçon, mais bien pour partager un savoir et des techniques. Je tiens donc à le remercier pour ce beau moment !
To conclude, this tutoriel by Rick Lawler for Miniature Mentor offers a real opportunity to get better while strengthening the basics. Open to a large public, it allows us to get acquainted to different media to build, paint and weather a vehicle. This is not a stupid recipe "book", for Rick takes time to explains why he is doing what he is doing. In this, the video really make it possible for us to adapt his knowledge on our models. The fact that we can see and hear Rick offers a non negligeable advantage to the whole video. I've really had pleasure watching it. I would even say that I felt like modeling when I was watching the video, because I could feel the proximity. Rick isn't showing off at any time and he is not there to give us a modeling lesson, but he really is sharing his knowledge and his techniques. I warmly thank him for this wonderful time!
